Global Warming, and why we need to act.

Prologue:

Since the mid 20^th century the theory of global warming has been rife. A nagging problem hiding in the closet of every politician or high-flying coal executive. For many that’s all it is, a problem to be rid of. But really it is more than that, and I’ll tell you why.

What is global warming?

Global warming is the theory pioneered by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius. He claimed that over a number of years the build up of gases in the atmosphere would heat the earth, resulting in unforeseen consequences. Over some years the theory evolved, today it is widely accepted, although many still deny it.

Why global warming is real, and the reason we have to act on it.

The time to act on global warming is NOW. In a period of increasing global tension, and power over nature like never before, a mistake now could be fatal. The hoards of deniers would have you believe that GlobalWarming is simply nature making its way. That we are overreacting, “for thousands of years the earth has been engaging in this kind of change”! To some extent, maybe. But stop and think for a moment, what if they are wrong? Well, the answer is simple, where stuffed. And what if they’re right? Well; we continue living like we are now. But the negatives far outweigh the advantages. In the unlikely event that I, along with thousands of scientists around the world, am wrong. Then we have switched to a renewable source of energy, made a change for the better. Honestly, why take the risk by being lazy and not acting. There is nothing to lose!

As al gore once said, “ Earth is but a tiny pixel in space, all of human history is contained in it, and it is our only home”. He is right, who knows how lucky we are to live on a planet as such, perfectly suited for life. Yet we are slowly killing it. Scientists predict that within a couple of years climate change will become irreversible. The time to act is now.

Back to the claims of climate change being part of the earths natural cycle. Yes, the earth does change temperature over time. And yes, the earth is due for a temperature change, possibly launching us into yet another ice age. But look a little closer at the scientific readings, and you will find that the pattern experienced many years ago was a temperature change of five degrees. Over 5000 years! That’s right, 5000! This is totally contrary to the cries of many. In recent decades the temperature has climbed by almost two degrees! And even higher temperature changes are forecast. This is obviously not a natural change, but one of human origins. Anyway, I mean, the theory is believable. Of course pumping millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is going to have some kind of effect on the temperature!

Have you ever though about the melting ice caps? The thousands of animals that starve as a result? Recently, a type of short tailed bird existing within the borders of Antarctica and the South Pole was driven to the brink extinction. As a result of the sudden change in temperature, a certain type of krill began thriving, turning the water around it’s home green. Subsequently, the bird could not locate its prey. That season, nearly all perished as a result of starvation. The fate of the polar bears is even worse, and the situation is only going to go downhill. Polar bears are not totally marine orientated animals. They need air to breath and land to rest and hunt. Less ice means decreased amounts of food and rest. Sadly; many polar bears have been left swimming for days, eventually succumbing to starvation.

Imagine a point where there is nothing we can do. Homes are underwater, animals are dying, and we are helpless to watch. We need to act while we still can.
